Ukrainianmassmediaprovidedextended
coverageof this event and informed that
“Ukrainiandelegationhoped for breakthrough
in the relationshipswith the countries of the
region”. Maindirections of thenegotiations
included cooperation in the fieldof investment,
oil andoil processing industries, comprehensive
construction, transportation,machine-building,
space and aviation industry and agroindustrial
complex. At theendof the visit, theparties
signed agreements onmutual protectionof
investments andUkraine additionally signed
agreements on trade andeconomic cooperation
with thegovernments of Oman andQatar.
After theendof theofficial visit of theMinister
of ForeignAffairsofUkraineAnatoliyZlenko,
Ukrainebeganpreparing for thePresidential visit
of LeonidKuchma to theGulf countriesplanned
for 2003. The first stage in that preparationwas the
visit to thecapital cityofUkraineof SaidSeif Bin
Jaber Al Suweidi, thePresident of theFederation
of theChambersof Commerceand Industryof
UAEandAbu-Dhabiwhowas invitedby theFund
for Support of Investment andPrivatization. In
Kyiv, hemetwithActingPrimeMinister ofUkraine
AnatoliyKinakh. Inhis statement forUkrainian
pressAl Suweidi underscored thatUAEdelegation
waspleased to findout that agreat number of
Ukrainiancompanieswerewilling tocooperate
withcompanies fromUnitedArabEmirates, as
was statedduring themeetings in theChamber
of Commerceand Industryand theMinistryof
EconomyofUkraine. “Wecan see you look forward
tocome to themarket, cooperateandperform
joint projects”, - saidAl Suweidi, emphasizing the
willingness toprovideall possible support to the
Ukrainianparty in this field.
Bigopportunities for further development
of relationships of UkrainewithGulf countries
were achieved in January 2003, after the visit
of President Kuchma to theGulf region. The
visit of thePresident of Ukraine to Saudi Arabia,
Bahrain, Kuwait andUAEwas described as
“unprecedenteddiplomatic activityof Kyiv”. In
addition to the agreements lifting thedouble
taxation stimulatingbilateral trade, Ukrainian
delegation stated thenegotiations allowed the
parties to achieve important agreements in the
fieldof defense and international security.
Basedon the results of this official visit to
theArab countries of theGulf, the President
of Ukraine Leonid Kuchma signed aMandate.
According to theMandate, the bodies of central
and local executive power were taskedwith
preparation andpresentation for reviewby
appropriate authorities of theArab countries
of theGulf of the proposal for investment
cooperation in the fieldof oil, space exploration,
energy, construction, irrigation, transport,
aircraft-building, high technologies, higher
education andhealth care.
What proves theefficiencyof bilateral
relationships betweenUkraine andUnitedArab
Emirates is the current positivedynamics of the
increaseof commodity exchangebetween the
countries. There is noneed touse complicated
methods of economic analysis toget proofs of
the fact that todayUkraine is oneof themajor
partners of UAE among theCIS countries and
that is holds the secondplace after Russiawith
regard to the commodity turnover.
