Oil Traded for Food represented aneffort of
the international community in thepersonof
theUN focusedon alleviationof theburdenof
Iraqi peoplewho found themselves in adifficult
situationdue to thegeopolitical situation in
the region. Ukraine alsowas to takepart in
this program. TransenergoCompany acted as
the authorized agent. It isworthnoticing, that
this program that existedbetween1996 and
2003, was the largest financial project in theUN
history and thatwaswhy itwas hard for us to
win the right of participation in it. Theprogram
allowed Iraq to sell oil to satisfyhumanitarian
needs of thepopulation andprovided food for
approximately 60%of Iraqi people. Over the
timeof theprogram’s operation, theproceeds
fromoil saleequaled$65million, out ofwhich
$46millionwere spent onhumanitarianneeds.
Unfortunately, thewell-knowndevelopments
that occurred in2003, preventedTransenergo
Company from implementationof its plans,
althoughwewere fullyprepared tobegin the
realizationof the concluded agreements.
It isquitedifficult tocatchupwithyou in
Kyiv, sinceyou spenda lotof timeabroad, in
particular, inUnitedArabEmiratesandSyria.
Whatare the interestsof TransenergoCompany
in thesecountries?
It is known that over the past 10-15 years,
the countries of theGulf region andof the
Middle East ingeneral made serious economic
achievements, therefore thewellbeingof the
population also increased. It turns out that
given the rapidgrowthofmarket capacity, the
countries are unable toprovide themselveswith
all the needed range of goods because some
branches of economy are still underdeveloped
or don’t even exist at all. On the other hand,
the regionhas great potential for export and
re-export of goods.We couldn’t but grasp such
business development opportunities. The key
toour success is the fact that Transenergo
Companywas one of the first companies that
beganworkingon themarket of the said
countries. Thiswas largely due to support of
UkrainianTradeCenter inDubai, the activities of
which cover the entireGulf region.
